Rape And Violence Against Women

I was just scrolling down my Facebook page when I came across again many images and posts about the Brock Turner case (People v. Turner). The case was filed in California and it involved a young white male called Brock Allen Turner who was charged with three counts of felony sexual assault. Turner was a student athlete at University and on January 18 he sexually penetrated an intoxicated and unconscious 22 year old woman with his fingers. 'The convictions carried a potential sentence of 14 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended six years in prison while probation officials recommended a "moderate" county jail sentence. On June 2, 2016, Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky sentenced Turner to six months confinement in the Santa Clara County jail to be followed by three years of probation. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program.' Wikipedia. The reason this case was so prominent was the time he served, Turner only ended up serving 3 months out of the 6 he was charged with and also because it showed just how common sexual assault is on campus universities in the USA and how they will try and cover it up or sweep it under the rug.

What I take from cases like these is the dismissal of sexual assault and that rape is not a serious crime if you are a white privileged male who has a career in swimming ahead of him, god forbid that crime prevent him from succeeding in later life. It shows that there are little to no consequences to raping and that you will just get a slap on the wrist and let go. Often the victims of rape have conditions like PTSD that will last longer than his sentence did sometimes years and can affect the victim's lives for a very long time. It makes me angry that rape is part of the culture we are breeding in our society, it is rampant and all boys are taught is that women are a distraction and it is their responsibility to not be a distraction, that the woman/girls are always the one at fault for a men/boys being unable to control themselves and use the littlest of restraint and respect.
